Orion Protocol GPS Tracker Setup & Wiring Guide (Port 5070)

Technical Guide: Orion Protocol GPS Tracking Hardware

The Orion Protocol is a specialized telematics language primarily operating on Port 5070. This guide provides technical installers with the exact wiring and SMS command strings needed to integrate the ET and BD series devices into any GPS platform.

Pinout for Standard 4-Wire Harness:
  • Red: Power Positive (+) 9V – 36V DC
  • Black: Power Ground (-) Negative
  • Orange: ACC / Ignition Sensing (Connect to switch power)
  • Yellow: Relay Output (Fuel/Engine Cut-off)

Warning: Always use a multimeter to verify vehicle voltage before connecting the Red wire.

Orion OBDtrac

No wiring required. Plugs directly into the vehicle’s 16-pin OBD-II port. Ensure the device is secured with a zip-tie to prevent it from vibrating loose from the port.

3. Critical SMS Configuration Commands

Most Orion devices use a default password of 0000 or 123456. Replace [password] with your actual device password.

Set Server IP and Port

To point your tracker to a specific server using the Orion protocol on port 5070:

IP[password],yourdomain.com,5070#

Set APN (Internet Access)

Required for the device to connect to the GPRS network:

APN[password],apn_name,username,user_password#

Check Status

Retrieve a diagnostic report (Battery, GPS signal, and Network status):

STATUS[password]#

Change Reporting Interval

Sets how often the device sends data (e.g., every 30 seconds):

TIMER[password],30#

Summary of Integration

To ensure successful data transmission, verify that your server firewall is open to TCP/UDP Port 5070. For the Orion OBDtrac, ensure the SIM card has “Voice + Data” enabled, as some firmware versions require SMS authorization to start GPRS flow.
